History of Bikaner

Bikaner’s history dates back to 1486 A.D. when Rao Jodhaji challenged his son to establish his own kingdom. Rao Bika chose the barren wilderness for his dwelling and the city soon became a thriving trade centre because of its location on the caravan route. Today, encounter antiquity in the old city surrounded by high walls and feast your eyes upon ancient forts, palaces and intricately carved havelis.Unlike other Rajasthani forts built on a hilltop, Junagarh Fort and Palace has been constructed on the sandy floor of the desert. The palace complex inside is lavishly decorated, with impressive stone work and carving details.

Popularly called the camel country, the city is renowned for the best riding camels in the world. Bikaner's history dates back to 1488 AD, when a Rathore Prince Rao Bikaji - a descendent of the founder of Jodhpur (1459 AD), Rao Jodhaji, established his kingdom here. nds on a slightly raised ground and is circumscribed by a seven km long embattled wall with five gates. The magnificent forts and palaces, created with delicacy in reddish pink sandstone, bear testimony to its rich historical and architectural legacy. Undulating lanes, colourful bazaars and bright and cheerful folks make Bikaner an interesting experience.

How to Reach There 

Air : The nearest airport is Jodhpur 240 kms. 

Rail : The Indian Railways connects Bikaner with cities like Delhi, Calcutta, Agra, Jaipur, Allahabad etc. The gorgeous 'Palace on wheels' also covers Bikaner in its eight-day tour of Rajasthan.

Road : Though the unfriendly desert sands surround Bikaner but the city is well connected by roads. There are local and inter-state bus services for Bikaner.
